Family Garden: Step 1 Preparation

On the side of our house there is a strip of gravel and our pool pump. We had been looking for a way we could use it and came up with the perfect idea: a garden! We built the frame out of redwood beams we found at the hardware store. We bought a special dirt for gardens to fill up the frame since our compost isn't quite ready. Now we're ready to plant.

Even our dog, Rookie, wants to help!

Easy Vegetarian School Lunches

At my high school the only vegetarian options in the cafeteria are burritos, fruit plates, pizza, and fries. If I had to eat these everyday, I would definitely get bored. So I get creative and bring different lunches to school everyday. Not only is it cheaper but it is healthier and tastes better too. Here are easy meals that I often bring for lunch:

• Lunch Salad/Lunch Wrap (Veggie Teens pg. 57)

• Taco Salad (Veggie Teens pg. 59)

• Sandwiches (lettuce, tomato, olives, cucumbers, cheese, and mayo)

• Cheese and crackers with sliced cucumbers and tomatoes

• Veggie Teens Tacos (Veggie Teens pg. 92). I pack the taco shells in one container to keep them crisp and the salsa, veggie taco meat, and lettuce in a divided tray.

What do vegetarians eat?

There are different types of vegetarian diets based on what the person eats. Here is a basic outline of the differences between types of vegetarians (from Veggie Teens: A Cookbook and Guide for Teenage Vegetarians):

Lacto-ovo-vegetarian

• Eats plant products, dairy products, and eggs

• Does not eat meat, seafood, or poultry

Lacto-vegetarian

• Eats plant products and dairy products

• Does not eat eggs, meat, seafood, or poultry

Ovo-vegetarian

• Eats plant products and eggs

• Does not eat dairy products, meat, seafood, or poultry

Vegan

• Eats plant products only

• Does not eat dairy products, eggs, meat, seafood, or poultry
